When
The Black Pound had the chance to pay homage to a very special and
important person who has contributed so much of his life to champion
reggae music, we had to decide how to approach this platform. We
managed to secure an appointment in his busy schedule. David already
had many engagements one of which included him flying to New York
to be a presented with an award after beating “Stone Love”
Sound System in Jamaica.
What is even more
interesting David won every round of the competition. The years of experience
have rewarded this champion of reggae music with maximum respect in
the industry, and wider world recognition for his devotion.
He
has championed reggae music around the world carpeting the wider international
community. He has attributed to the increase of reggae music fans spanning
the globe. Recruiting new followers in his lifelong journey of his reggae
cruise, spreading the gospel and appeal.
We
were duly informed by David of the growth of reggae music and sound
systems across Europe, in Germany, Italy, France and Spain, all of which
boasting sound systems capable of tackling the more experienced sounds
from the Caribbean and UK. They have the ability to cut dub plates,
chat patois and they have constructed sound systems with the capability
to deliver bass that King Tubby would envy.
Sound
clashes have always been an important foundation of David’s journey
and his worldwide appeal has helped to fill many sound clashes. As with
most sound clash opponents they usually find out to there detriment
that David has the ammunition and skill to out manoeuvre most opponents
leaving them scouring their catalogues of tunes for a worthy response
to one of David’s onslaughts.
In
the arena of a sound clash David has spent so much time that his judgment
and assessment of his opponent’s catalogue of dub plates are always
matched with meaning and relevance. You can listen to one of David’s
infamous sound clash CD: Stone Love V David Rodigan available at www.myspace.com/davidrodigan.
The Black Pound
would go as far as to say David Rodigan has possibly devoted most of
his life to reggae music, the people , and the culture. He has also
embraced many of the traditions and influences of the Caribbean lifestyle
and culture.
In the reggae world
of David Rodigan, every song has a meaning , every lyric has a soul,
every beat has a root, and every tune has a melody.
In Part 2 of this
feature we examine the influences that David has shared on his travels
and also the future of reggae music from his perspective.
