THE BLACK POUND PAYS HOMAGE TO - JANET KAY

The Black Pound could not begin this page without stating the most important fact that “Silly Games” released in 1979 made history by becoming the first reggae song to reach the top of the UK music charts (number 2). Janet Kay was the first British singer to achieve this. Janet born the first of six children in the 1960’s career began with an invitation from a school friend to a band rehearsal. Tony Gad of Aswad was at the rehearsal, he was so impressed by Janet voice that he introduced her to the legendary Alton Ellis and of course the rest is history.

This history can be found at Janet’s official web site www.janetkay.com. Janet has shone the light of Lovers Rock far and wide and has continued to grow the musical style for nearly 30 years.

Janet Kay has continued to pursue her music unabated by the different fashions which have entered the reggae scene. With all the new manifestations of reggae, the foundation and sound of UK reggae, which was created so long ago, can still be heard in many of the new tunes played today. Janet continues to tour as she has an established and growing fan base from Europe to Japan and beyond.

Janet’s new Cd “Now And Then” showcases her new material plus revisits some of her previous songs. Silly Games to name one, which still holds its magical spirit is recaptured amongst the new tracks on the CD. “Live at the Barbican London” was recorded, and broadcasted recently on BBC3. The collaboration with Carroll Thompson and Victor Romero Evans was a wonderful rendition of lover’s rock, and a welcome sound to be heard on commercial platform.
